Eid al-Adha

This past week was the Islamic celebration of Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is the day that Muslims sacrifice goats, sheep, cows and sometimes camels to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice that Ibrahim was willing to make for God. The sacrifices represent the pillars of Islam in action as families and friends reunite to feast and the meat is divided evenly to share with the poor and less fortunate.

These sacrifices take many forms in different parts of the world, but in Dhaka, they are very public. Some friends and I went to Old Dhaka to witness the sacrifices and we took some interesting pictures. They can be found here http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=64334&l=4b0e6&id=706356503 . Some of them are quite gory, so be careful if you have a weak constitution.

It was a very interesting day and afforded me the opportunities to think about many things including religion, charity and eating meat.
